Professional Background

Prior to joining CSCS, over thirty years experience of working in a number of schools, community education settings and LAs in a variety of roles with diverse responsibilities. Worked as an independent consultant before joining Capita in May 2006. Currently a member of the School Teachers ‘Review Body for England and Wales. Significant school based as well as LA senior management experience. Specific roles included:

  • Group Director of Education and Children’s Services in the second largest local authority in Wales responsible for all functions relating to children’s social care and the full range of education functions including, early years, school improvement, special educational needs, lifelong learning and cultural services.
  • Director of Education and Leisure Services in a S Wales LA following local government reorganisation. The role was expanded to include Leisure Services.
  • Welsh Joint Education Committee -Senior Assistant Secretary (Management)
  • Supporting all the LEAs in Wales in the development of policy across a range of education functions, topics including: financing schools and LEAs, SEN, Adult Youth and Community Education and a range of strategic policy issues.

Profile

Particular interest in the development of holistic approaches to child development, learning and management practice. Recent work has included the design of effective partnerships, implementing a strategy for “community focused schools”, and promoting the integration of services to secure better outcomes for children and young people. He considers literacy to be the “golden skill” and seeks every opportunity to promote its importance, especially the role of parents and carers in their children’s learning.

Projects completed with CSCS

  • Participated in two major bids.
  • Reviewed the extended schools programme in Hull and implemented changes
  • Reviewed the School improvement service in Hull and recommended changes
  • Provided interim management capacity for Hull CC
  • Currently with Service Birmingham on their Customer First programme
